Stylish Country Home Decor

January 3rd, 2010 Gail Jones No comments

The house is finally spick and span and you put your feet up for a minute with a nice cup of coffee by the side of you and you pick away at your muffin. You feel worn out but it’s the good kind of tired where you know you’ve done a hard day’s work and you have no regrets about it. A happy feeling settles about you and you look around yourself with contentment.

A magazine lies tantalizingly within reach and you give in and pull it towards you, intending to enjoy your well-earned rest. The main cover story jumps right out at you, called Country Home Decor. Naturally you flip through eagerly to that very section, you had just seen an article on turning your house into a small country haven in another magazine and you were interested.

There are pages and pages of the magazine filled with what can only be described as the most ideal examples of country home decor imaginable. You gaze longingly at the various styles and furnishings you see gracing the magazine’s pages. A quick glance up from your magazine reassures you that your own modest abode hasn’t changed somehow instantly into one of those lovely country homes you were just admiring.

A sad sigh passes your lips at the realization and so you go back to reading your magazine article. You had never realized that you were the sort of person who could stand the country home decor style but now upon reflection you think you just might be able to.

Without your even realising it you find yourself marking the pages that interest you the most, making small mental calculations on how best to create the same effect but on the smaller budget that you have at your disposal. After all, it wouldn’t do to spring for that lovely dresser and have to go without your freshly ground whole bean coffee now, would it?

But, you could definitely go for that appealing table runner without too much of a problem. And if you donated all those modern chrome coffee mugs and dinner sets to charity you wouldn’t really be splurging, would you, since you would have already done your best for charity and given them all these things?

And what about exchanging those flashy blinds for something that’s a bit more in the country home decor style. And while you’re going about it, perhaps you could even swap that awful lampshade you received as a house-warming gift for something more country.

The only thing that is left for you to do now is to lie back and enjoy the fruits of your labours and gaze with beaming pride upon your newly redecorated home. Furnished, naturally enough, in the best of country home decor style that you could cull from every source that you came across, like that first magazine which started it all off.

When Did You Last Decorate Your Bathroom or Kitchen?

January 3rd, 2010 Marion Jones No comments

For the people who seem to have it all or for those who are bored with their lifestyle, there are several things that one can do to spruce-up one’s life. Maybe one of the best ways however is to begin redecorating one’s home. Two of the first places one should look at redecorating are your bathroom and kitchen.

These are often the most overlooked and yet, most used rooms in the entire house. Think about it, have you spruced up at least even one of these rooms within the past five years? The answer is probably “no”, in which case think back to the last time you even looked closely at your bathroom or kitchen other than to Spring clean them.

Probably, if you noticed anything at all, you put the notion off until a future date when you could devote more time to decorating your bathroom or kitchen. At that time though, the place probably didn’t look as bad as it does now, after all, the years add up and even though you’ve been keeping it spotlessly clean you can’t stop the steady march of time.

The chances are that if you take a closer look now, you’ll find that the curtains are looking a bit drab and worn around the edges, as are the bathroom rugs. And let’s not even talk about the soap dish. It is quite true that they don’t make them like they used to, and with very good reason too!

So, do yourself a favour and throw out all that unnecessary clutter in the bathroom and get yourself some new stuff – you will be astonished at what lovely things you can find these days. Anyway, you’ve probably been admiring that lovely bathroom set you saw in the shop for some time, so at the very least now you will have a good reason to go out and splash out on yourself.

And while you’re at it, don’t forget to buy that nice new spice rack you saw last week for the kitchen and a few mats that can be used in either room. They should be resilient to such commonplace occurrences as water, soap, oil grease, fat and all the other things that somehow seem to become ground into carpets.

But, if you’re looking for some new ideas about decorating your bathroom or your kitchen, there are a number of resources you can get your inspiration from. The best one I’ve found so far are the catalogues, which you can peruse until you find what you’re looking for.

With all these options, you can even substitute something that is a bit cheaper for the things you see in the catalogues. This then, is the best way to get your decorating projects off the ground and to keep yourself amusingly busy for some while to come and to transform your long suffering bathroom and kitchen into new and sparkling areas.

Decor for Teen Rooms

January 2nd, 2010 Marion Jones No comments

Teen rooms are a headache for mothers everywhere. It’s not even like when they were pre-teens. In those days, if their rooms were untidy, you could shout at them and get them to clean it up, and, barring that, you could go in and do a good job yourself. However, when it comes to teens and their rooms you’re dealing with something whole different entirely.

True, you could go and tell them to clean up their rooms. And yes, you could shout at them a bit too, if you wanted to, or you could go and tidy up the room yourself. However, that’s when the trouble begins. Teen rooms are private places and not to be entered into unless you’re invited to.

Let Heaven help the person who tries to tidy up the mess on the carpet. It was there for a good reason and you just had absolutely no right whatsoever to touch it. At least, that will be what most teens will argue and, you being the patient, loving mother that you are, will just roll your eyes skywards and explain that the pizza and grubby, old shirt thing just don’t work well together and that you were just rescuing them from impending plague.

And in their turn, your teens will roll their eyes and scream, that you should not exaggerate, it wasn’t about to develop legs and walk off on its own, and if it was then wouldn’t that make a fantastic science project. So, you keep cleaning and they keep putting things right back. And you end up right back at square one.

Of course, one way that you could deal with this catastrophe is to redecorate. Teen rooms might be sanctities of peace for them, but even they would love it if you gave their rooms a great makeover.

That doesn’t mean that the room will be any cleaner once they’ve moved back in, but at least you’ll have seen the inside of the room long enough to satisfy you for the next couple of years. That is unless you’re thinking of redecorating their rooms every year.

But now you come to your next problem. Since teens are notoriously different with regard to their rooms. You might find that your teen rooms are decorated very differently from that which you had expected and that which you would have done first of all. This is where a comprise ought to be struck, if your teen wants black walls for his room, then say you want another colour too that will brighten up the black.

Be prepared to compromise a lot on your ideas no matter how ridiculous their ideas are to you. After all, they’re only a teen for a while and later on they will look back with horror on what bad taste they had had.

It is your duty as a parent to allow them these years in their lives that they can look back on with mock horror, and ban their kids from doing the same to their own teen rooms.

Ideas for Interior Design

January 2nd, 2010 Michael James No comments

Redecorating your house really isn’t that easy and it only becomes even less so when you are stumped for ideas. The only way to really get over this shortage of interior design ideas, is to sit down, put your feet up and have a cup of tea.

I’m not kidding, there’s no better way of getting a new perspective on things than taking a break from everything. In the first place, you become more relaxed, and in the second place a steaming cup of tea or coffee is always welcome.

Now that you’re sitting down comfortably and are suitably relaxed, shut your eyes and envision the room that you want to do up. Even if you are doing more than one room, it’s always a good idea to begin with one room first, working your way logically through to the next one and then the next one.

Before you commence your journey through the land of interior design ideas, get yourself a notebook and pen so that you can jot down any good ideas you have before they are forgotten

So, just lie back and imagine the room in your mind. Try to see it as you want it to look. And if that’s too hard for you, then first try to replace separate parts of your room or articles in it. This is always a good way to start. If you’ve still got a mental dearth of interior design ideas, then leaf through some interior design catalogues beforehand so that you have at least a working idea of what you can do to redecorate your room.

The interior design catalogues don’t need to be anything more expensive than your free local department store catalogue, turned to the home furnishing pages. Then again, these days you also get specialist shops which cater solely to the art of redecorating your home. If you have the time, a quick trip down to one of these might also help to end the dearth on interior design ideas, and can probably help to get you kick started.

These stores will have staged sets of many designs, giving you a good idea of what your room could look like. However, if you’re going to one of these places, be prepared to shell out some money as no matter how tight a hand you keep on your pocket, you’ll always find something you want to buy.

This is not always a bad thing, but unless you watch out you could end up buying things you don’t really need and without a proper idea of what you want the room to look like, it can turn out disastrous. Don’t worry though, if you keep your picture in mind, you can go back home and get a start on redecorating your rooms the way you want to.

Furthermore, now that you’ve managed to get at least some interior design ideas of what you want your rooms to look like, your whole redecorating project ought to be that much easier and that much more enjoyable.

Black and White Ideas for Stylish Home Decor

December 20th, 2009 Marion Jones No comments

When people think about stylish home decor and decorating their residence, whether it be one or two rooms or the entire house, the first thing that usually springs to mind is colour. Generally people choose colours they are fond of or those which correspond with pieces of their existing furniture. When searching for ideas for stylish home decor, one idea which is perhaps too often overlooked is decorating with the two basic colours (or shades, to be more accurate) ” black and white.

Black and white, when used in decorating demonstrates style and creates drama. Top interior designers say that every room in the house could benefit from adding a touch of black. Black is a colour which anchors and stabilizes a room. Bringing sophistication, black is definitely a colour that demands attention. Living room decorating ideas for a home using black can include accessories such as light fixtures, trim or furniture. Black serves to add definition to the focal points in a room. Black is just one of the colours that stands out, but it is definitely one of the most eye-catching!

Decorating with the shades of black and white in your living room decorating ideas, provides a clean, fresh, elegant air to the environment of the room. This combination can be added to any room in a house making it a sophisticated area. Black and white are often used in contemporary home decorating and often used to accent other colours in the French Country style. It may be hard to visualize but there are many ideas for decorating a home using combinations of only these two basic colours.

The flooring is a great place to start when considering stylish home decor. Black and white vinyl tiles laid alternately make a beautiful chessboard pattern and gives a clean and elegant appearance. Black marble used on the floor, accented by wide white baseboards is another fantastic idea for decorating a home. Laying white ceramic tiles with a black border or simply painting the floor black or white and using stencils of the opposite colour for decoration, is also quite stunning. These are great ideas for decorating a room.

Is there anything more perfect than white walls? Painting the walls white or even an off-white would make a perfect background for accessories such as artwork framed in black. Imagine that – stylish home decor! Elegant black window treatments or black shutters against a clean, crisp white wall would definitely create an aura of sophistication. Perhaps a glass-topped table with black iron trim and black chairs? These are great ideas for decorating a home using only black and white.

Imagine a bedroom decorated using only black and white – that would be lovely stylish home decor too. A black or white iron bed-stead, covered with a striped black and white blanket or eiderdown. The pillow cases could be either all black or all white and you could add throw cushions in the opposite colour.

A chunky leather black or white armchair or sofa in the corner would definitely accent the living room decorating ideas. Then you could have the white walls with a modern piece of artwork, framed in black, hanging on it. That would surely add to the modern feel of your living room decorating ideas. Black furniture against the crisp white walls would definitely look really neat and tidy and you could jazz it all up with accessories like pewter or silver candlesticks, jugs or vases.

If you think the living room decorating ideas need a bit more colour to complete the effect, maybe a throw or a cushion in a bold colour such as red or gold for the chair in the corner of the room would be enough to highlight the room. There are many ways to decorate a room. However, discovering the one that suits you and those who live with you is very important. It’s nice to do something extreme and off-the-wall but remember you must be able to live with it for quite a while.

Shower Curtains in Fabric

December 2nd, 2009 Marion Jones No comments

Once upon a time, fabric shower curtains went the way of the dodo and glass shower doors became fashionable. But, like most fads, common sense regained control and the fashions of yesterday have come around full circle. You’ll now find that fabric shower curtains are all the rage once again and are readily available most at stylish home decor stores.

However, don’t throw out your old glass doors just yet. The convenience and smart look of the glass doors seem to be firmly entrenched with some people. Adherents of glass doors will swear by these and will even sometimes be ready to lay down their reputations for them.

You’ll discover, when discussing fabric shower curtains, that their owners are laid back and will smile when asked about their preferences. Naturally, they’ll defend their fabric shower curtains but they also admit to seeing the advantages of glass shower doors as well. No dripping from the bottom of the curtain, no constantly damp curtain folds that need to be separated out each morning in order to prevent mildew.

Most convenient of all, is the easy cleaning granted by glass shower doors. However, as the fans of fabric shower curtains will also tell you, glass doors have their downsides too, the biggest of which being that if you permit the cleaning of the doors to go for even one week, stains will begin to form along the sides where they’re fixed to the wall and some of these seem to have a much stronger will than you do.

And if you don’t give the glass shower doors a regular cleaning, your otherwise nice clean bathroom will begin to look rather grubby. The reason though why fabric shower curtains are an all time favourite of many people in the know, is for only one reason and one reason only. This is also what leads these people to have a smug smile on their faces even after they’ve just spent the last half hour cleaning their bathroom. Fabric shower curtains are disposable and so can be changed quickly.

Yes, that’s the one whopping big reason why fabric shower curtains are still a firm favourite of loads of people. Have you ever tried replacing your glass doors on a regular basis? It just won’t happen and its doubtful if it will ever happen within three years, unless that is you take a hammer to it.

Yes! Yes, yes, and yes a thousand times more. That was the answer you gave two weeks ago when your boyfriend took you out to dinner and proposed. There was no second thought in your mind then and there isn’t any now either really. The only thing that you’re worried about though is the actual details of the wedding.

Your boyfriend, now your fiance of course, is very laid back and casual about it and said that anything you want was OK with him. He was certain that you would do a smashing job, just tell him if you needed anything.

That’s all well and good, and usually you would have relished the chance, in fact you did jump at the chance. But now you’re getting confused about what to do for your wedding decorating ideas. The motifs are all blending as one into your brain and you still don’t know where to have the reception.

Of course, you could have the reception in an up-scale hotel with the works, everything catered for and all the niggily little details taken care of, but that seemed so impersonal, and you really want your wedding to be one that you, and everyone else, will remember for the rest of your life. So what can you do now?

Well, first and foremost, just take a deep breath and relax. Working yourself up into a frenzy won’t do you any good. Next call your bridesmaids and all willing and able people whom you trust to your side and have a council of war.

This is where you will hammer out the details and get fresh perspective and ideas into your planning, and where most of all, you can have some fun with your wedding decorating ideas. Someone else has the fantastic notion of providing a bunch of those little disposable cameras so that those who wanted to, would be able to take same photos, and you’d end up with a great many more unrehearsed pictures than you otherwise would have had.

Yet another person suggests a great basis theme design. Your wedding decorating ideas are now flowing fast and furious as one person after another chimes in offering you all the assistance you need to get your wedding plans off to a flying start.

However, it is your mother who comes has the best wedding decorating ideas of all and you’d think that that was the least of her worries! Maybe|Perhaps you’d like to get married and then have the reception at their place.

They could put up a marquee to cater for all the guests, and the house could be decorating to suit the occasion. And you say, ‘Yes’, again because there’s nothing you want more than to be married at home.
