The French Open Championship

August 26th, 2010 Owen Jones No comments

It is pretty unimaginable that you will not have heard of the French Open tennis championship, because it is a competition which is an annual topic of conversation. In French the name of the competition is ‘Les Internationaux de France de Roland Garros’ or ‘Tournoi de Roland Garros’. This tournament, which lasts for about a fortnight is held in Paris at the Roland Garros Stadium, from which it got its name.

The French Open is one of the most advertised and broadcast sports events in the whole world of sport and many VIP’s go to it. The attendees of the game are fanatics who await with baited breath every stroke, especially when there is a close struggle between the two sides, trying their best to win. TV viewers actually get a feeling of being there live too.

The French Open tennis championship comes in second on the annual schedule of the Grand Slam tournaments and its history goes back to the year of 1891 when it became an international competition. At that time it was called the ‘International Championship of Tennis of France’ or ‘Championat de France International de Tennis’ in French.

Initially, only players that were registered or licensed in France were permitted to participate in this competition, but things took a different turn in 1925, when the French open tennis tournament finally was accessible to foreign players. Until 1912, the ground the players used was made of crushed red brick dust. Actually the crushed brick was formed into a sort of red clay that was spread over the ground, which, until then, would have been a green lawn.

The public’s enthusiasm for the French Open tennis tournament held at the Roland Garros stadium, dates back to a competition fought between the Philadelphia Four (Rene Lacoste, Jean Borotra, Henri Cochet and Jacques Brugnon) who won the Davis Cup in 1927. It was the trigger of the desire in the French to defend their cup in future competitions. This new tournament was meant to bring back home the cup and was held at a stadium named after the World War I ace Roland Garros. The name has stuck since then.

The term ‘open’ was has been used since 1968, when the tournament was open to both amateurs and professionals alike who wanted to test their skills at tennis. Since then the French Open tennis tournament has also brought in some novel prizes.

Apart from the usual winners’ prizes, they also award a ‘Prix Orange’ for the most correct and press-friendly player, a ‘Prix Citron’ for the player with the strongest personality and a ‘Prix Burgeon’ for the one the best new-comer of the tennis year.

Hybrid Electric Engines: Some Information

July 21st, 2010 Owen Jones No comments

Have you ever asked yourself about hybrid cars? They certainly look stylish and modern, but what is it about them that makes them so unusual and so special? After all, most cars look the same these days, do they not? They are all designed by computer to be aerodynamic and aerodynamic is aerodynamic, so they all end up looking indistinguishable to anyone who is not an aficionado.

Well, the fact is that the difference between a hybrid car and a standard car lies under the bonnet. There are different kinds of hybrid vehicles as well, but the most widespread kind has a hybrid electric engine. Therefore, you could say that what makes hybrid cars special from most other, ordinary cars is their engine.

Or engines really, because hybrid electric cars essentially have two engines. One, the internal combustion engine, runs on petrol, LPG or diesel and the other, the electric motor, runs off electricity stored in an array of heavy-duty batteries. On the other hand, ordinary cars only have an internal combustion engine. It is a good idea to investigate these two types of engine separately.

First of all the electric motor. Electrical energy is generated by several components on the car and stored in a large bank or array of powerful batteries. The electricity is created by the turning of the internal combustion engine, just as with a standard car, when it is in use, but also by the wheels or / and the car’s braking system. Different models have different methods of generating this electricity, but they are all very hi-tech and very efficient.

When the car’s internal computers decide that the car no longer needs the strength of the internal combustion engine, it will turn it off and switch to the electric motor instead. The conditions where this might happen are, for example, when you are driving slowly in inner-city traffic, when you are cruising at moderate speed on a flat road or when you are going down hill. This saves a considerable amount of fuel, which is clearly a great saving to you.

However, there are times when you need more power than the batteries can give you, for instance, when accelerating hard, when overtaking or when climbing a hill. At times such as these, the electric motor will close down and the combustion engine will take over and start supplying power to the accelerator and electricity to the batteries. When the need for extra power has passed, the batteries will take over again.

These choices are all taken by the hybrid electric vehicle’s (HEV’s) on board computer system and you will not notice much other that a surge of power or a quietening of the propulsion system. This works very well in most scenarios, but some drivers of HEV’s would like to have a manual override for abnormal circumstances, such as an undulating terrain.

All in all, cars with hybrid electric engines work very well at reducing fuel bills but they are still too dear to be much more than a gimmicky toy and a salve to the conscience for the well-to-do.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece writes on many subjects, but is at present concerned with hybrid electric engines. If you would like to know more or check out some great offers, please go to our website at New Hybrid Vehicles.

How To Buy A Computer

June 19th, 2010 Owen Jones No comments

As with everything else, buying a computer is straightforward if you know what you are doing. For those who do not know though, it can be a complete nightmare. People who have had a computer before have a good idea about what they need and what they want, but for those who have never had a computer before, all the components that make up a computer can appear bewildering.

The obvious answer is to buy the best that you can manage, but this still might puzzle some people, because the best is not always the most expensive. In the computer world, ‘the best’ usually means the biggest and the fastest.

Just to make it more confusing, ‘the biggest’ here does not always mean in size, but in capacity. The only large size that is important is the monitor. This is a quick rundown of how to purchase a computer and its components:

Before you buy a computer, think about why you want one. If it is for educational purposes: that is surfing the web and looking up content, you do not have to have more than a basic desktop computer. If you are always on the move, then you might require a laptop, or maybe cyber cafes will suffice.

This kind of machine is also ample for writing letters and emails and almost any type office work. Top flight computers are only required by games players and exhibitionists.

Buy a complete computer. That means acquiring a kit of: CPU (the ‘computer’), monitor (screen), keyboard, mouse, speakers and printer. This way you will just have to plug everything in and off you go – you can be sure that they are all well-matched.

When you buy your next computer, you can buy all the bits and pieces individually to get even better value for money or a system more accurately tailored to your requirements.

Go for the largest screen, the fastest memory and fastest hard drive and the biggest memory (RAM) and biggest hard drive (gigabytes) that you can afford. You do not need a great deal of ’space’ for normal office work or normal surfing, but if you get into downloading music or films, then memory soon gets eaten up, although you could always add a new external (plug-in) hard drive later, in need be.

Make sure that you buy a computer that is not too old, if you go second-hand. This is because you can up-grade computers for two or three years, but after that manufacturers change the casings and new components will no longer fit – planned obsolescence, it is known as.

Get your computer from a well-known, reliable local store and make sure that it has a good guarantee. Computers do not often go amiss, but you do not want to have to send it half-way across the country and wait three weeks for it to come back. If you are in business, get two. Perhaps a laptop and a desktop and synchronize the contents of both so that you always have your data.

Following these guidelines will ensure that the computer beginner gets ‘enough’ of a deal and an adequate machine that is fit for purpose without paying through the nose.

Fashion And Ladies Golf Attire

June 1st, 2010 Rhys Jones No comments

I picked up one of those ‘Golfing for Women’ type magazines the other day and got to asking myself where these women actually live, who wear the golf attire shown in women’s golf magazines? I have never seen women, not even the pros, wearing such expensive and flamboyant clothing.

It’s so simple to spend tons of money fitting yourself out for the sport of golf. Think about hats, sunglasses, gloves, shirts, shorts, socks, windbreakers and shoes, and it is obvious that the costs add up very quickly, even if you do your shopping at cheap online sales. Then you have to factor in the cost of clubs, balls, bag, cart and fees and you have to play a round of golf really quite frequently to keep the “CPU” (cost per use) down to a tolerable level.

One glossy advertisement showed a beautiful young ‘golfing lady’ in really tiny shorts (as if that’s admissible on golf courses!) that cost nearly $300, a golf shirt at almost $600, a jacket by Ralph Lauren at almost $200 and two-toned Utuser shoes costing $400 plus.

That totals about $1,500! I know that I could never hope to get the CPU on that outfit down to anywhere near an acceptable limit in my golfing lifetime! Don’t misunderstand me – I love clothes and I really love shoes, but could never afford, nor even want, golf shoes or pants that cost as much as a lot of people’s weekly wages.

Granted, you want comfortable golfing shoes that don’t look like an old pair of wooden clogs, but honestly, you will be able to find cheaper and yet still trendy golfing shoes.

I have a couple of very stylish golf outfits, although none of them are famous brand names. If I added up the cost of all of those articles of clothing, it would not add up to the cost of a Tse golf shirt. Personally, I would rather have several stylish outfits than one that is priced over-the-top.

If I were to wear a $1,500 outfit to play golf, I would simply be too worried about getting it dirty or sweating in it to play a proper round.

Tennis Psychology (Part 1)

May 28th, 2010 Gail Jones No comments

Tennis psychology is only understanding the workings of your opponent’s mind and gauging the effect of your own strategy on his/her head and also understanding the mental effects resulting from the various external causes on your own head.

However, it is also true that you no one can be a successful psychologist of others without first understanding his own psychology. Therefore, you must study the effect on yourself of the same thing occurring under various circumstances. This is because you react differently in different moods and under different conditions.

You have to realize the effect on your game of the resulting annoyance, joy, bewilderment, or whatever other form your reaction takes. Does it improve your prowess? If so, try for it, but never offer it to your opponent. Does it deprive you of concentration? If so, either remove the cause, but if that isn’t possible, strive to ignore it.

After you have properly judged your own reaction to circumstances, observe your opponents to decide their characters. Similar characters react in a like way, and you may judge people of your own type by yourself. Opposite temperaments you have to seek to liken with those people, whose reactions you are already familiar with.

A person who can control his/her own mental processes stands an great chance of determining those of another for the minds works along definite lines of thought and can be studied. One can only control one’s own thought processes after studying them very carefully .

A steady, phlegmatic baseline player is rarely a keen thinker. If he was he would not stay on the baseline. The physical appearance of a player is usually a fairly clear indication of his/her type of mind. The stolid, easy-going player, who usually advocates the baseline game, does so because he hates to stir up his/her slow mind to work out a safe strategy of getting to the net.

Then there is the other kind of baseline player, who would rather remain at the back of the court while directing an attack intending to break up your game. He is a much more dangerous player and a deep, quick thinking opponent. He obtains his/her results by changing his/her length and direction and worrying you with the variety of his/her game. This player is a good psychologist.

The first kind of tennis player mentioned above just hits the ball without much idea of what he is really up to, while the latter always has a definite plan and sticks to it.

The General Psychology of Tennis (Part 2)

April 24th, 2010 Gail Jones No comments

The hard-hitting, unpredictable, net-rushing tennis-player is a person of impulse. There is no real strategy to his/her game, no comprehension of your game. He will make brilliant coups on the spur of the moment, largely by instinct; but there is no, mental power of consistent thinking. It is an interesting type of character.

The really dangerous player is the one who mixes his/her strategy from back to fore court under the direction of an ever-alert mind. This/her is the player to study and learn from. He is a player with a definite purpose. A player who has an answer to every query you present him in your game. He is the most subtle antagonist in the world of tennis. He is of the school of Brookes. Second only to him is the player of dogged determination that sets his/her mind on one plan and sticks to it, bitterly, fiercely battling to the end, with never a thought of change.

This is the player whose psychology is rather easy to understand, but whose mental standpoint is hard to derail, for he never permits himself to think about anything except the business at hand. This/her player is your Johnston or your Wilding. I respect the mental capacity of Brookes more, but I admire the tenacity of purpose of Johnston.

Choose your type from your own mental pattern, and then plan your game along the lines best suited to you. When two men are in the same class as regards stroke and equipment, the determining factor in any given match is the mental viewpoint. Luck, so-called, is often seizing the psychological value of a break in the game, and turning it to your own account. We hear a lot about the “shots players have made.” Few realize the importance of the “shots players have missed.”

The science of missing shots is just as important as that of making them, and at times a miss by an inch is of more value than a return that is killed by your opponent. Let me tell you why. A player drives you far out of court with an angle-shot. You run hard for it, and having reached it, you smash it hard and fast down the side-line, missing it by an inch. Your opponent is shocked and put off his stride, knowing that your shot might just as well have gone in as out. He will expect you to attempt it again and he will not risk it next time. He will strive to play the ball, and may fall into error. You have thus taken some of your opponent’s confidence, and increased his/her chance of error, just because of a miss.

However, if you had merely tapped back that ball, and it had been killed, your opponent would have felt even more confident of your inability to put the ball out of his/her reach, while you would only have been winded for no reason.

Let’s just say that you made the shot down the sideline. It was an apparently impossible get. First it amounts to TWO points in that it took one away from your opponent that should have been his/her and gave you one you ought never to have had. Second it also worries your opponent, as he feels that he has thrown away a big chance.

The psychology involved in a tennis match is fascinating, but readily understood. Both men start with equal chances. Once one player establishes a real lead, his/her confidence rises, while his/her opponent worries, and his/her mental standpoint becomes weaker. The sole objective of the first player is to hold his/her lead, thereby holding his/her confidence.

If the second player pulls even or draws ahead, the inevitable reaction is an even more drastic contrast in psychology. There is the natural confidence of the leader, but boosted by the great stimulus of having turned a seemingly inevitable defeat into a probable victory. The situation of the other player is the reverse. He is apt to lose confidence and play worse. The collapse of his game plan will be the result.

How To Choose A Computer

April 17th, 2010 Owen Jones No comments

It is far easier to buy your next computer than it is to purchase your first one, because those who’ve bought and operated a computer in the past already have an idea of what they require in a new computer, but those who are new to the computer world can easily become lost in the multitude of choices to be had.

The short reply to “What should I purchase?” is “the best”. Of course that answer is completely personal because “the best” to one individual is not going to be the best to another. Our description of “the best” is the fastest and with the biggest memory, but even that can leave the computer newbie puzzled. Here’s a quick rundown of what the computer greenhorn should do and why.

1. Purchase a computer that includes all the fundamental components. Every computer arrangement can be broken down into four major components: CPU unit, screen, keyboard, and mouse. For the novice, it’s best to buy a computer that has all of these peripherals incorporated so that when it’s taken home, assembling the computer is a uncomplicated affair of plugging the bits in where they belong. Save the individual purchase of these peripherals to those who have more understanding.

2. Decide what you’ll use the computer for. If you want to use your computer for surfing the web, sending email, or doing simple word-processing or spreadsheet tasks, a computer with the basic components that we just described plus a printer should be adequate. If you want to use a computer to help with a career in multimedia however, you’re going to need to increase your system with possibly a scanner, digital camera, tablet, or digicam as well for example. If you want a computer to help with a career in music, you might want a good microphone and array of speakers.

3. Create a financial plan and stick to it. How much can you afford to splurge on a new computer? Although the price of computers is declining, they can still be quite a large outlay particularly if you require supplementary components as discussed previously. In addition, you’ll need to factor in overheads for Internet access, repairs, servicing, and insurance.

4. Begin comparison shopping and search for the quickest and largest. By fastest and biggest, we mean the computer with the fastest processor, the quickest modem, the largest memory, and the biggest hard drive capacity. Even if you think that you’ll never need the amount of speed or space available on the market today, it’s important to have in the event that you truly do require that much in the future. Having such a hefty reserve will cut down on expenses when the time comes to upgrade.

5. Stick with the better-known makes. Going off the trodden path with lesser-known makes is again an exploit for those who have more familiarity with computers. Although those better-known makes might be a tad more expensive, the computer greenhorn will appreciate the comfort of buying a computer from a business that has a lengthy history of building quality products, and that has the finances on hand for satisfying returns, trades, servicing, and guaranties.

6. Select a good store. Once you have an idea of what you want in a computer and what sort of computer that you need, the only task left to do is to select the place where you want to buy it. There are many places, which include computer stores, online shops, auction sites and operated computer stores. For the computer learner, we suggest buying a computer from a bricks-and-mortar store. In a real store, you have the chance to see the computer of interest itself and pose questions. New computer buyers will also have a store warranty, returns, trades, and services.

These recommendations should give the computer newcomer a useful foundation in selecting a good computer for the first time and these suggestions apply to both Windows computers or Apple Macintosh computers. After taking these decisions and finally choosing one that fits your requirements, you can then venture into the fascinating world of software – a world that is just as grand as the world of hardware!

Why Get A See-through Computer Case?

April 13th, 2010 Owen Jones No comments

What is a clear computer case and what can it do for you? Well, before we begin talking about the transparent computer casing, allow me to ask you something: what does your computer?s casing signify to you? I could even inquire: what does your computer signify to you? I ask this because your answer will determine what you would like for your computer and its housing or casing.

Most individuals have always been happy enough with the simple, standard light-grey housing that comes as bog-standard with the preponderance of computers. Some have never even had a second thought about it. But then there are others who have thought about their computer?s casing a lot and who would like something unique for their computer.

A number of of these people were good at metalwork, others at woodwork and a few at glassware and there are some truly fantastic, innovative, home-produced housings out there. Especially among the gaming community. However, we are not all so talented with our hands, but that does not signify that we have to be stuck with the grey computer housing.

The simplest option, if you want a custom computer case is to build one out of acrylic – the sort of material used to build the majority of fish tanks. You can purchase and easily cut sheets of acrylic for the sides and fix them all together with acrylic resin. That may appear easier said than done, but it really is not. Initially you would have to study the architecture of a standard computer case and then just copy it in acrylic. You could build a translucent computer casing in a weekend.

Or you could buy a transparent computer housing kit. These kits arrive in flat-packs just like most kitchen furniture and can be effortlessly assembled according to the instructions with a screwdriver. No cutting, no measuring, just a little gentle screwing.

And I signify gentle, as the screws that come with the see-through computer case packs are typically made of acrylic as well and will snap easily. It is the only part of the construction process that requires a warning note, because you don?t want to have to drill out a busted screw, do you? That would only put a downer on your fun.

So why would anyone want a translucent computer case? I think that there are loads of explanations. Some individuals may just want to be different and others may want to show that they can assemble or even create such a housing. However, the clear computer casing also has aesthetic and practical advantages. At least the good ones do.

On the Aesthetic Front: hobbyists add neon lights and small LEDs that twinkle on and off or just glow eerily, possibly triggered by some event, like a hard drive coming to life. These displays are called ?themes? and are normally red or blue, but can be almost any imaginable colour. Then you can include coloured fans (or paint your existing ones). You already have at least one fan in your casing and probably two or three.

On the Practical Front: lots of individuals like to see what is going on inside their computer casing and it is neither practical nor safe to remove the cover all together. Furthermore, assembling your own see-through computer housing permits you to include more fans as over-heating is the main cause of hardware malfunction. The more fans the better.

A transparent computer case would also allow you to observe whether a fan has failed, which would result in over-heating in a normal housing and certain hardware failure, whereas you would see it happening through your transparent computer casing and swap the fan before major injury and loss of data can take place.

Choosing Computer Peripherals

April 8th, 2010 Owen Jones No comments

When you’re buying a computer you should think about not just the quality of the internal peripherals, but also the quality of the peripheral ones that either come with it or are available for it to let you to get the most out of the whole multimedia experience.

Computer components, from printers to web cams, are an important segment of our computing lives and activities, if not the most significant one, depending on our needs and requirements. When you are confronted with needing to pick peripherals, think about a few aspects before making your purchase: utility, price/quality combination and the purpose they will have to perform.

So, when buying a printer, you should think about why you are purchasing it. For example, if it is meant to be an office printer and it will be typically used to print out contracts and papers, then the best choice is an all-in-one printer that can print, scan and operate as a fax machine at the same time. If however you want a home printer ordinarily to create copies of your digital photographs then thinking aboiut a colour printer is a must and perhaps you should consider getting a laser one too.

The keyboard and the mouse come first in the computer-user relationship and they also add a touch of personality to your private computer. Look for a complete set-up that may incorporate a mouse pad and try to harmonize them with the colour and shape of your computer case – even a clear computer case. Nowadays, optical and wireless mice are the best choice, so purchasing a wireless multimedia keyboard would be a fit too.

These days, clear computer cases are all the rage and they really do look pretty futuristic, depending on how they are lit. These clear computer cases fit really well with a computer on which video games will be played a lot. The clear computer case is usually made of acrylic and is wholly translucent, meaning that all the internal components are visible. The clear computer case is normally ‘themed’, that is it has a prime colour in the acrylic, most often red or blue. The case is then lit up by a string of theme-coloured LEDs which are triggered when particular events take place (for instance, when the CD drive is spinning.

Communication with cherished ones is frequently completed through the Internet. So, why not render it just right by purchasing a web cam to allow real time conferencing between friends and family? Furthermore, you will need a microphone to be able to hear and see your loved one at the same time and then you can natter as if he or she was in the room with you.

There are many kinds of computer components on the market: external hard drives, loud speakers (from miniature to extremely large), real 5.1 systems, scanners, card readers for your digital camera and loads more. All you have to do is put together a list of the uses you require your PC for and then go shopping for the necessary peripherals for each of those uses. Whenever those requirements can be combined, as with the printer/scanner, you must try to do that to avoid using up a lot of room.

If you are looking for one of those ultra-modern clear computer cases, please go over to our website right away at http://clearcomputercase.biz for more information.
